“저스틴 전도사님, 제 아들이 더 이상 교회에 나오기 싫다고 합니다.” “저스틴 전도사님, 제 딸이 하나님을 믿지 않는다고 했습니다.” 이것은 지난 4년 반 동안 이곳 빌립보교회에서 YM 전도사로 섬기면서 부모님들로부터 받았던 대화, 의견, 메시지, 그리고 이메일 중 일부에 불과합니다.
최근 매주 YM에 큰 변화와 부흥이 있었다고 말하고 싶지만, 사실은 그렇지 않습니다. 많은 학생들이 신앙에 어려움을 겪고 있으며, 어떤 학생들은 교회에 가는 것을 정말로 즐기지 않으며, 어떤 학생들은 슬프게도 아예 떠났습니다. 그리고 COVID-19 대유행으로 인한 고립은 학생들의 상황을 더 쉽지 않게 만들었습니다.일부 부모님들과 가족들에게 이 현실이 매우 고통스럽고 희망이 없어 보인다는 것을 압니다. 그럼 어떻게 해야 할까요?
누가복음 18장에서 예수님은 자신의 원한을 풀어줄 때까지 불의한 재판장에게 계속 요청한 끈질긴 과부의 비유를 말씀하십니다. 그런 다음 예수님은 불의한 재판장이 이 과부의 말을 듣게 된다면 하나님께서는 그의 백성의 말을 얼마나 더 많이 들으시겠느냐고 제자들에게 상기시키셨습니다. 예수님은 “저희가 항상 기도하고 낙심하지 말아야 할 것을” 이 비유로 말씀하신 것입니다. (눅 18:1)
다음 세대에 대해 생각할 때 상황이 때때로 절망적으로 느껴질 수 있습니다. 포기하고, 기도를 멈추고, 낙담하는 것이 더 쉬워 보입니다. 그러나 예수님은 우리에게 낙심하지 말라고 일깨워 주십니다. 오히려 그분은 우리에게 계속해서 하나님 아버지의 은혜와 긍휼을 간구하라고 격려하십니다.
어떤 가족들에게는 상황이 너무 낙심되고 희망이 없어 보일 수 있지만 다음 세대를 위해 계속 기도하는 데 함께 동참해 주시기 바랍니다. 하나님께서 참으로 그들의 삶에 부흥과 변화를 일으키시며 그들의 믿음이 오직 예수 그리스도 안에서만 찾을 수 있는 기쁨과 소망으로 넘치도록 하기 위함입니다. 계속해서 기도하며 우리의 믿음을 나누고, 계속해서 우리 자녀들의 고통과 상처에 귀를 기울이고, 주님께서 어떻게 그들을 구속하시고 그들 가운데에서 이루어가실지 보기 원합니다.
우리 혼자 할 수는 없지만 이 모든 것을 선을 위해 역사하시는 하나님(롬 8:28), 낙심하지 말라고 부르시는 우리 하나님이 있기에 소망이 있습니다. 우리 가족과 다음 세대를 위한 기도로 그분께로 돌이키고 주님께서 하실 모든 일들을 간절한 마음으로 기다리기 원합니다.
주님의 축복이 함께하시길 바라며...
“Pastor Justin, my son says he does not want to come to church anymore.” “Pastor Justin, my daughter told me she does not believe in God.” These are just a couple of the conversations, comments, messages, and emails I have received from our Church of Philippi parents while serving here as YM pastor for the last 4.5 years.
Although I wish I could say there has recently been great transformation and revival every week in YM, that is simply not the case. Many students are struggling in their faith, some really do not enjoy being at church, others have sadly left altogether. And the isolation that came with the COVID-19 pandemic did not make things any easier for students. I know for some parents and families, this reality has been deeply painful and seems hopeless. So, what should we do?
In Luke 18, Jesus tells a parable of a persistent widow who continues to plead with an evil judge until she receives the justice she is asking for. Jesus then reminds his disciples that if an evil judge will listen to this widow, how much more will God listen to His people? Jesus tells this parable, “…to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.” (Luke 18:1)
When we think about the next generation, things can sometimes feel hopeless. It seems easier to give up, to stop praying, and to stay discouraged. But Jesus reminds us to not lose heart. Rather, he encourages us to continue to plead with our Heavenly Father for His grace and compassion.
Although for some of our families, things may seem so discouraging and hopeless, I want to challenge you to join me in continuing to pray for our next generation. That God would indeed send revival and transformation in their lives, that their faith would overflow with joy and hope that is found in Jesus Christ alone. Let us continue to pray, continue to share our faith, continue to listen to the pains and hurts of our children, and see how the Lord will redeem and work in each of them.
Although we cannot do this alone, we have hope because our God is working all of this for good (Romans 8:28), and He is calling us to trust in Him and to not lose heart. Let us turn Him in prayer for our families, for the next generation, and wait in eager expectation for all the Lord will do.
